As we embark on Dry January, a month dedicated to reassessing our relationship with alcohol, we’ve spoken to members of our team who are taking on this challenge. We caught up with Jo Stubbs, our fantastic DSG Minibus Driver and Wellbeing Champion and our brilliant Marketing and Communications Lead, Lula Walmsley, to hear about their experiences, motivations, and the impact this month has on their well-being. In this article, we share their insights as they take part in this annual initiative.
My name is Jo Stubbs. I work as a minibus driver and health and wellbeing champion on HS2 Mainline North for the Danny Sullivan Group. I have been with Danny Sullivans for over 6 years and have worked on several different projects with the Group.
I have decided to do Dry January this year as I have been feeling as if I’m getting older, and not as fit as I used to be. A hangover can last 3 or 4 days now, rather than 12 hours!!!
I have found, to my surprise, that I actually sleep better when I have not been drinking – I used to use sleeping better as an excuse to have a drink – and ‘just a night cap’ would turn into a proper sesh!!!
Weekends used to be – get up, have a shower, a greasy breakfast to line my tummy and to the pub for the early football matches. Then watch the next matches that were on, meet up with the rest of the ‘4 o’clock club’ (even though I had been there since 12!) and see how long into the evening I could last. Sometimes it was a good 12-14 hour shift!!!
In the evenings after work, I would ring my other half as I was leaving work, tell him to meet me at the pub at 6pm, and most nights we would still be there at 10pm. I did not realise that you could wake up not feeling poorly, or without the tell-tale rosy cheeks. That was just run of the mill for me.
This was seven years ago now, and I am in a much better place – so I just decided to do dry January to prove to myself that I can – I have found that I don’t like going out for a drink in the week anymore, as I actually fear feeling ill in the mornings and worry that I won’t be able to do my job properly. Of course, there is now the threat of random drug and alcohol tests on site as well.
So we are half way through the month now, and I have discovered other things – I am a dab hand at putting up curtain rails, and, for Christmas my kids bought me a ‘paint by numbers for adults’ kit which I absolutely love. I am planning my spring gardening and generally enjoying myself doing new things that I haven’t tried before.
I thoroughly recommend doing a month without drink – it’s a voyage of self-discovery, and the feeling of wellbeing is immense.
GOOD LUCK FELLOW DRY JANUARYERS!!!
My name is Lula Walmsley, and I am the Marketing and Communication Lead at DSG. I have been with the company for just over a year and a half, and I am a Danny Sullivan Group MHFA (mental health first aid trained).
I’m doing Dry January for a few reasons! First, it’s a great challenge to prioritise my health and see how I feel without alcohol. I also wanted to spend less money, and I’m already noticing the difference. One of the biggest benefits so far has been better sleep—I’m feeling more rested and clear-headed. It’s also been interesting to find new ways to wind down after long days and explore socialising without everything revolving around drinks. It’s been a refreshing change, and I’m learning a lot about myself in the process!
What is a surprising fact that you have learned about alcohol and its impact on society or yourself?
I recently learned that whilst alcohol can initially induce drowsiness, leading to quicker sleep onset, it often results in fragmented sleep later in the night. As the body metabolises alcohol, sleep becomes lighter, increasing the likelihood of awakenings and reducing overall sleep quality.
I used to think a drink or two resulted in sleeping better – but this was actually just me falling sleep quicker, sleeping lighter, and not actually feeling fully rested by the time I woke up.
What are your thoughts on drinking patterns?
I’ve noticed that while I do enjoy a good two-for-one deal, it often leads to a situation where one drink turns into many. It’s funny how, in the UK, it feels like there’s an occasion for everything to revolve around drinking—airport pints, bottomless brunches, summer afternoons in beer gardens, pre-drinks, or even journey juice! So much of what we do seems to be centred around the next drink. Marketing and trends have played a role in promoting binge drinking, but what’s encouraging is the shift with newer generations. They’re opting for quality over quantity, choosing one nice drink rather than endless rounds of £4 pints. I think this change is really positive, and it’s refreshing to see that there’s less pressure to drink excessively. People are realising that fun doesn’t have to involve alcohol, and I think that’s a huge step in the right direction.
What learning do you think you’ll take away from your Dry January experience?
One of the biggest takeaways from Dry January for me has been realising how much better it is not to drink midweek. I’ve found it’s so much more enjoyable to fill my evenings with things I love rather than mindlessly scrolling through my phone with a glass of wine in hand. I’ve really been enjoying kombucha as an evening drink, getting back into documentaries, and focusing on my health by hitting the gym. I also created time to start my level 4 counselling diploma, which has been such a rewarding experience. And on top of all that, my bank account is much happier!
I feel amazing—well-rested, in a happy mental headspace, and overall, I’m using my downtime in ways that actually contribute to my wellbeing. That said, I am looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine at the end of this month, but I’ve definitely learned to be more mindful of both my consumption and my spending. Taking this month off has made me feel so much better. It doesn’t have to be just January, though—if you haven’t tried it, consider taking a month off or simply reducing your alcohol consumption. I’m sure you’ll notice many benefits!
Take on 31 days alcohol-free with Alcohol Change UK for a total body and mind reset. From clearer skin and a mental health boost, to saving money and time – there’s a whole lot to gain this Dry January.
Dry January means going alcohol-free for the whole month and that can bring huge, obvious benefits – but the really good stuff is under the surface…
What you’ll notice
See your skin get brighter, your wallet fuller, your days busier. Feel your step get bouncier, your mind calmer, your mornings fresher. Most people who do Dry January see a whole host of obvious benefits that make Dry January the perfect start to the New Year.
On the inside
A month alcohol-free has a lot of benefits:2018 research conducted by the Royal Free Hospital and published in the British Medical Journal, found that a month off:
Lowers blood pressure
Reduces diabetes risk
Lowers cholesterol
Reduces levels of cancer-related proteins in the blood.
Long-term change
How can it be that just a month off has a long-term impact? Being alcohol-free for 31 days shows us that we don’t need alcohol to have fun, to relax, or to socialise. It helps us learn the skills we need to manage our drinking. That means that for the rest of the year we are better able to make decisions about when we drink and how much, so we can avoid slipping into drinking more than we really want to.
That’s extra good news, because alcohol is linked with more than 60 health conditions, including liver disease, high blood pressure, depression and seven types of cancer. In fact, alcohol is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability for people aged 15-49 in the UK. Cutting back on alcohol long-term reduces your risk of developing these conditions.
Managing your drinking
If you feel that alcohol may be having a negative impact on your life, making small changes to your drinking could help you feel better.

People who are clinically alcohol dependent can die if they suddenly, completely stop drinking.
If you experience fits, shaking hands, sweating, seeing things that are not real, depression, anxiety, or difficulty sleeping after a period of drinking and while sobering up, then you may be clinically alcohol dependent and should NOT suddenly, completely stop drinking.
But you can still take control of your drinking. Talk to a GP or your local community alcohol service who will be able to get help for you to reduce your drinking safely.
At DSG Academy, we pride ourselves on a team of passionate professionals who bring unique skills and expertise to the table. One of our standout assessors is Gavin Johnson, a dedicated individual whose journey from the fields of farming to the forefront of NVQ assessments exemplifies resilience, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to helping others succeed.
A Journey Rooted in Hard Work
Growing up on a farm, Gavin was no stranger to machinery or physical labour. Surrounded by experienced family members, he learned to operate various plant equipment from a young age. These formative experiences instilled in him not only technical skills but also a deep appreciation for hands-on work—a passion that would later shape his career path.
As the farming industry began to decline, Gavin sought a trade that would offer long-term stability and opportunities. He pursued a three-year carpentry and joinery apprenticeship, mastering the craft and working in the profession until the age of 23. However, Gavin’s outgoing personality and love for teamwork left him yearning for something more dynamic.
Rising Through the Ranks
Transitioning into the utility sector, Gavin joined a team installing substations and power cables, starting at the bottom with trench work. Determined to advance, he set his sights on operating plant machinery, a role that combined his technical know-how and drive for better opportunities.
Through sheer persistence—spending weekends unpaid to practice on excavators—Gavin quickly became the team’s top operator and, within months, was leading his own crew. His story is a testament to the belief that opportunities are there for the taking if one is willing to work hard and embrace challenges.
Passion for Assessment
For the past 12 years, Gavin has channelled his hands-on expertise and personable nature into his role as an NVQ assessor and quality assurance compliance professional. His approach to on-site assessments is grounded in creating a relaxed atmosphere for candidates, ensuring they can demonstrate their true potential without the added stress of formal evaluations.
“It’s vital to make candidates feel at ease,” Gavin shares. “Seeing their confidence grow and receiving positive feedback from both them and their employers makes it all worthwhile. There’s no greater reward than seeing someone achieve their goals and knowing you’ve played a part in that journey.”
A New Chapter at DSG Academy
Since joining DSG Academy six months ago, Gavin has brought the same passion and dedication to his work. He’s been instrumental in laying the foundation for the academy’s success, achieving significant milestones and preparing for an exciting year ahead.
“I’ve received incredible support from the team at DSGA,” Gavin reflects. “We’re building something amazing here, and I’m thrilled to be part of it. The challenges ahead will push us to new heights, and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish.”

Celebrating National Inclusion Week: Danny Sullivan Group’s Commitment to Social Value
At the Danny Sullivan Group (DSG), social value isn’t just a buzzword – it’s woven into the very fabric of what we do. National Inclusion Week offered the perfect opportunity for us to reinforce our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community engagement, spanning various events and activities that celebrated the people and communities we work with across the UK. From career workshops to employee recognition and collaborative events with our partners, the week was a whirlwind of meaningful interactions, appreciation, and impact. Here’s a snapshot of how DSG marked National Inclusion Week.
Kicking Off at the Sikh Careers Fair, Leeds:
The week began with an impactful presence at the Sikh Careers Fair in Leeds, where DSG proudly represented the construction sector. Our involvement wasn’t just about showcasing career opportunities; it was about fostering genuine connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Our Social Value, Skills and Employment Advisor, Suki Dhillon-Basra, had the honour of participating in a panel focused on interview tips and techniques, as well as leading a workshop on transferable skills and CV peparation.
It was a day full of productive discussions, with attendees of all ages looking to take their first step or make a career change. Many participants followed up with us post-event, seeking further guidance and mentorship. It was heartening to see the curiosity and drive of so many individuals eager to explore opportunities in construction.
At DSG, we believe in recognising dedication and hard work. On Monday, our Labour Manager, Sophie Howard, alongside Suki, had the pleasure of presenting one of our standout groundworker apprentices, with a £50 voucher. Her commitment and positive attitude have not gone unnoticed, with glowing feedback pouring in from her colleagues daily. Her recognition was well-deserved and a testament to her growing career within our team.
Apprentices remind us of the importance of investing in young talent and the future of our industry. Their dedication fuels our purpose, and we are proud to foster such a supportive environment.
Giving Back with a Macmillan Coffee Morning.
We believe that inclusion extends beyond our workforce and into the communities we serve. On Tuesday, we joined forces with our client, Skanska, to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the M42, J6 Centre of Excellence.
It was a delightful morning filled with freshly baked pakoras, an assortment of cakes, and mouth-watering apple crumbles, all made with the spirit of giving. The event raised £320 to support Macmillan Cancer Support, with donations still open the following day. Events like these highlights how collaboration between businesses and clients can have a real impact, not just financially, but by bringing people together for a common cause.
Wednesday saw the team on the road again, recognising hard work and forging new community relationships. First stop: A1 Birtley to Coal House compound, the team presented Karen, our diligent cleaner, with a £50 voucher. Karen’s work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to go above and beyond were acknowledged by all, and this small token of appreciation was a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for her continued commitment.
Later in the day, the team ventured on to visit the Buffalo Centre in Blythe, run by Eileen, which supports the local community through various programs including youth clubs and care packages. We are thrilled to be planning future collaborations with the centre, offering our support in areas such as volunteering, pre-employability workshops, and donations for their well-being initiatives. The potential for impact is immense, and we look forward to deepening this relationship to create lasting social value for the Blythe community.
Site Engagements in Scotland:
The latter half of the week took us to Scotland, where we turned our attention to site engagements. Thursday saw us visit the BAM site at CTLR, where we presented Jordan with a £50 voucher for his outstanding work ethic. Jordan’s reliability and dedication were praised by his team, highlighting the importance of recognising contributions at every level within the organisation.
Friday continued in the same vein with a site visit to Multiplex, where we had a productive planning session with Callum Scott and Steve Doherty. The discussions centred around upcoming labour supply needs and future social value engagement opportunities. We also had the pleasure of recognising Craig, the site gateman, for his initiative and reliability, awarding him a £50 voucher as well. Craig has become known as the go-to person for additional responsibilities, demonstrating how essential each role is to the success of a site.
National Inclusion Week was an inspiring reminder of how much can be achieved when we come together – whether it’s celebrating the success of our apprentices, collaborating with clients for a good cause, or recognising the unsung heroes on our sites. We are proud of our efforts this week and the dedication of the entire DSG team to make it a success.
As a company, we remain committed to driving social value across the UK. Our involvement in career workshops, community partnerships, and daily recognitions highlights the breadth of our nationwide engagement. We look forward to continuing this journey and creating meaningful, inclusive opportunities for all.
Celebrating the Impact of Danny Sullivan Group’s Social Value Hours in STEM Engagement
We’re thrilled to share the incredible success that Danny Sullivan Group (DSG) has achieved in our Social Value (SV) STEM engagements over the past academic year. Our team’s dedication to fulfilling client requests, surpassing KPI obligations, and engaging in DSG-centric activities has allowed us to make a significant difference in diverse environments. From primary schools to SEND colleges, we have worked across a variety of educational settings, training environments, armed forces, prisons, and youth centres within communities, delivering high-quality guidance and support.
Expanding Reach and Breaking Stereotypes
At the heart of our efforts is the desire to break down stereotypes and challenge the stigmas often associated with the construction industry. We’ve actively contributed to reshaping perceptions by highlighting the 100+ careers available within our sector. Through mock interviews, careers fairs, CV writing workshops, and STEM activity sessions, we’ve provided students, young people, and adults with valuable insights into career pathways, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to pursue careers they may not have considered.
One of the key achievements worth celebrating is the completion of 215 Social Value hours, and reaching 12k+individuals, by our Social Value, Skills & Employment Advisor, Suki Dhillon-Basra, more than doubling the original target. This is a testament to the commitment of our team to exceed expectations and deliver meaningful, impactful experiences.
Engaging Activities to Inspire and Empower
Some of our standout activities include mock interviews and practical STEM engagements. Our mock interviews have been a vital tool in giving students their first positive interview experience. By following the schools’ lead and tailoring our approach to each unique situation, we ensure that students feel comfortable and supported while gaining real-world interview skills. This helps prepare them for future job opportunities, instilling confidence and providing invaluable interview techniques.
We have also been deeply involved in CV writing and interview preparation, assisting students in crafting professional CVs and navigating Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These services, promoted through the STEM website, make our expertise easily accessible to schools and organisations seeking support in preparing young people for the world of work.
One of the ways we’ve made a lasting impact is through building long-term relationships with schools and educators. By consistently engaging with students and teachers, DSG has become a trusted partner in their STEM education journeys, positioning our company as a preferred employer at careers events. This relationship-building is key to ensuring the continuity and depth of our engagement, allowing us to make a sustained difference in the lives of young people.
Practical STEM Activities with a Purpose
Our practical STEM activities have also been a highlight of our engagements. Using STEM connectivity kits, we introduce students to interactive, hands-on learning experiences that align with the Skills Builder Universal Framework. These activities are not only fun and educational, but they also focus on building eight essential skills: problem-solving, leadership, creativity, listening, staying positive, teamwork, aiming high, and speaking. These inclusive activities allow individuals to participate at their own pace, while developing skills that are critical for their future success in any career.
A Bright Future Ahead
Looking forward, we are eager to continue building on the success of this year. The DSG team remains committed to supporting STEM education, providing career guidance, and expanding our outreach to even more communities. A heartfelt thank you to all our STEM ambassadors and educators for their tireless efforts in inspiring the next generation.
The future is bright, and together we will continue to make a lasting impact.
Suicide Prevention in Construction: Starting the Conversation to Save Lives
Today marks Suicide Prevention Day, and it’s vital to acknowledge that the construction industry faces one of the highest suicide rates across all sectors. With a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, many workers are silently struggling with mental health challenges. At DSG, we are committed to addressing this issue head-on, fostering a supportive environment for every individual.
In our latest DSG Mental Health Awareness Podcast, we’ve brought together Ruairi Coffey, our Head of Social Value, Skills and People Development, along with Senior Health, Safety, Wellbeing & Sustainability Advisors Beck Dorrington and Shahana Begum, to talk about the mental health crisis in the construction industry. Through honest dialogue, we hope to encourage others to break the silence, start the conversation, and remind everyone that one conversation can save a life.
At DSG, we believe in the power of community and connection. Our SMILE well-being strategy reflects our ongoing commitment to mental health:
Social: We foster strong connections by encouraging team-building and community engagement, creating a sense of camaraderie across the workforce.
Mental: We promote mental wellness through expert guidance, resources, and access to our dedicated Mental Health First Aiders.
Individual: We empower personal growth with tailored soft skills training and bespoke eLearning programs that cater to individual needs.
Living: We support balanced lifestyles by offering resources on physical health, nutrition, and stress management to help maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Economic: We boost financial literacy by providing advice on budgeting, savings strategies, and financial planning, easing the stress that financial concerns can bring.
Beyond these efforts, we offer a range of mental health support services, including our confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This program is available 24/7, providing free, anonymous support for all our employees and their families, offering a lifeline whenever it’s needed.
Visit our helplinessection on the DSG website for more information on how you or someone you know can get help today.
Let’s all take a moment to listen, reach out, and support those who may be struggling. A small conversation can truly make a world of difference. Together, we can save lives.

Our offerings span various qualification levels. At NVQ Level 2, we provide support for a wide array of skills, including general groundworks, concrete finishing, deep drainage, steel fixing, carpentry formwork, reinstatement modules, and the full spectrum of plant operations. As you progress, Levels 3 and 4 cover all aspects of supervising in the workplace, while Levels 5 to 7 focus on adhering to management controls.
A unique aspect of our training is that 90% of the qualification material is covered onsite. This means our assessors come to you, minimising downtime and ensuring that your learning experience is integrated seamlessly with your work schedule.
When asked about the importance of upskilling, Gav explained, “Clients often ask about the benefits of upskilling in construction. My response is consistent: upskilling is crucial, not just for career advancement but for overall well-being. DSG Academy: Bridging the Skills Gap in Construction with Industry-Leading Courses
As the construction industry faces a critical transition, DSG Academy stands at the forefront, providing essential training and qualifications to upskill the workforce.
With the impending expiration of Industry Accreditation (IA) cards, commonly known as “Grandfather Rights” cards, by December 2024, obtaining a nationally recognised qualification is no longer optional but a necessity for continuing work on construction sites. DSG Academy is here to help workers navigate this transition smoothly and secure their careers in the evolving industry.
The Urgency of Upgrading Skills
The deadline for the IA cards, particularly those issued from January 2020, is fast approaching, with an expiration date of December 31, 2024. For older cards, the renewal process concludes on June 30, 2024.
The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has mandated that all construction workers must possess qualifications that demonstrate their competence. This directive aims to elevate safety and competency standards across the industry, ensuring a more skilled and reliable workforce.
Act Now
Failing to secure the necessary qualifications could lead to job disruptions. From 2025 onwards, unqualified workers will be barred from working on construction sites, making it imperative for individuals to act now to avoid future employment challenges.
DSG Academy offers flexible assessment options to accommodate the busy schedules of construction professionals. These assessments can be conducted on-site and include professional discussions and practical observations, allowing workers to achieve qualifications without significant interruptions to their work.
Support and Funding
To ease the financial burden of obtaining these qualifications, DSG Academy highlights the availability of grants from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). These grants can significantly reduce the costs associated with the necessary training and assessments, making it more accessible for workers to comply with the new regulations.
Tailored Programmes for Efficient Certification
DSG Academy’s programmes are designed to fit the unique needs and schedules of construction workers. By enrolling in the academy, workers can ensure they receive their certifications efficiently and effectively, well before the deadline rush. This proactive approach not only secures their future in the construction industry but also enhances their skill set, making them more competitive and competent in their roles.
Secure Your Future in Construction
The time to act is now. With DSG Academy’s industry-leading courses, construction workers can bridge the current skills gap, comply with new regulations, and continue their careers without disruption. The academy’s commitment to providing flexible, accessible, and high-quality training ensures that every worker can upgrade their skills and secure their future in the ever-evolving construction landscape.
Enrol today to take the next steps in your career, ensuring you are qualified, competent, and ready for the challenges of tomorrow. Time is ticking, and the future of construction work depends on the actions taken today.
Let DSG Academy guide you through this transition with confidence and expertise.
